Kohl Rabi Purple Delicacy
Pack size: 200 seeds
Sow: March to July
Harvest: July to November
FAST MATURING VARIETY: With a squat bulb and antennae-like shoots, this odd-looking plant is part of the cabbage family. The name translates from German as ‘turnip cabbage’ and the mild, sweet flavour is somewhere between a turnip and a water chestnut, with a crisp, crunchy texture. It can be found in two colours, pale green and this, the less-common purple is later and hardier than its green counterpart.
DELICIOUS CRUNCHY TEXTURE: The swollen stems of kohl rabi look as if they've just landed from outer space, but this architectural vegetable is a real delicacy. The purple-flushed globe has a taste similar to the sweet, crunchy heart of a broccoli stem, and can be eaten as a crisp raw ingredient in salads or cooked like turnips.
HOW TO PLANT: Sow direct into fertile soil in shallow drills in spring. Thin seedlings to 15cm apart and protect from slugs. Alternatively, grow in containers, sowing direct and allowing four plants to a 35cm pot. Kohlrabi is quick to mature, taking as little as 10 weeks from seed to harvest: cut when the swollen stems reach tennis ball sized.
TOP GROWING TIPS: Sow from March to July for a harvest from June to September. Sow a few plants every three weeks to ensure a continuous harvest right through till late autumn. For best results start indoors in modules and then transplant outside once established
GO BACK TO YOUR ROOTS: Kohl Rabi is a great starter vegetable to grow. Planting veg, herbs and flowers is a wonderful way to spend time in your garden, cultivate mindfulness and appreciate the little things just like in years gone by. Working with the earth and growing things is immensely satisfying – teach your children or grandchildren this priceless skill of harvesting food in their own gardens, allotments, greenhouses, inside the home in pots or even in community gardens!
All of our seeds are produced in the UK and are supplied in sealed packets with growing instructions.
