AROMATIC ASIAN HERB: Holy basil, Ocimum tenuiflorum has purple stems and green to purple leaves, and it smells very fragrant and clove-like. It has been used for a very long period in Ayurveda and includes significant quantities of the essential oil eugenol. It is widely planted in South East Asia and is used extensively in Thai cooking.

ATTRACTIVE PINK FLOWERS:  A small, upright, bushy variety with highly aromatic, purple-green, serrated leaves that are used in culinary dishes, as well as medicinally. Attractive spikes of pink flowers appear in summer.

HOW TO PLANT: From April to May, sow thinly, 1.5 cm deep, into carefully prepared pots indoors. Germination usually takes 10-14 days and once the seedlings have germinated and have grown 10-15cm tall, transplant the seeds or spread the plants 30-50cm apart outdoors. Water plants thoroughly after planting especially during warm summer days. Pinch out tips to encourage bushy plants.

TOP GROWING TIPS: Holy Basil can grow out to a height of around 40 cm and a width of about 90 cm. The leaves are green and 5 cm long, but the stems and blossoms are a lovely purple colour. Prefers full sun and a sheltered location, for best results in the UK grow indoors.

GO BACK TO YOUR ROOTS: Holy Basil is a great herb to grow. Working with the earth and growing things is immensely satisfying – teach your children or grandchildren this priceless skill of harvesting food in their own gardens, allotments, greenhouses, inside the home in pots or even in community gardens!
