RELIABLE TRADITIONAL VARIETY: Red Giant Celery is a wonderful option since it is flavourful, dependable, and quite resilient. Giant Red is a cultivar that consistently produces well and is well worth planting. The stems have a purple tint and become pink when blanched. It is very hardy variety and It tastes fantastic and very traditional and can be used for your Christmas dinner as it can tolerate the harsh winters.
SLOW GROWING AND PACKED WITH FLAVOUR: Celery is a classic salad vegetable both refreshing and crunchy. It can also be cooked in many ways, made into soup, or added to stews, so it’s extremely versatile. Celery also very good for you, it is nutrient rich, containing, antioxidants and fibre, plus with barely any calories it’s a great healthy snack. And, of course, if you grow it yourself, it’ll be far fresher than shop-bought celery and packed with even more flavour and goodness.
HOW TO PLANT: Early sowings in trays under glass at 16-18°C. Later sowings in pots or trays in a cold frame or unheated glasshouse. Sow the seed onto the surface of moist seed sowing compost and lightly cover to its own depth. Heated sowings should be pricked off into trays 5cm apart as soon as large enough to handle. Harden off before planting in growing site 30cm apart. Outdoor sowings should be thinned before planting out in June.
TOP GROWING TIPS: Celery is happy in sun or light shade, as long as it doesn’t go short of water. Requires generous watering and never let soil dry out. Rich in nutrients, antioxidants and fibre, celery is particularly good for the digestion, bones and heart. Take care when tending celery, as it can cause a skin rash – it may be best to wear gloves and long sleeves.
