Beetroot Bona variety. Pack size: 200 seeds approximately. Easy to grow beetroot seeds.
Sow: March to July
Harvest: June to October
VERSATILE VEGETABLE FOR PICKLING, ROASTING & SALADS: A mid to late season beetroot producing round roots with smooth skin and intense red flesh. Bona has a high sugar content producing beets with a very tasty sweet flavour. Suitable for both full or baby veg also ideal for pickling. Small Beet leaves can be used in salads, larger beet greens can be boiled or steamed like spinach
FROM FIELD TO FORK IN 4 MONTHS: Plant outdoors or indoors in troughs, containers or beds to cultivate tasty beetroots, one of the easiest and trouble vegetables you could grow. This beetroot seed variety can be sown from early spring to mid summer. They can be harvested as baby beets from about 100 days where they will grow to a size of around a golf ball, or left to fully mature they are best harvested when they reach the size of a tennis ball.
HOW TO PLANT: Sow direct into well-prepared soil from March until July. Make shallow drills and sprinkle the seed about 1.5cm deep. Cover with fine soil allowing about 30 cm between rows. Thin the seedlings to about 8-10 cm apart. Succession sow throughout the season every 2-3 weeks to keep you well supplied. Beetroot can also be started off indoors in modules and can be multisown by sowing 3-4 seeds in each module and then transplanting out as a bunch.
TOP GROWING TIPS: Plant beetroot in a sunny spot with low shade, in well-drained soil that has been mixed with compost. Beetroot Detroit will need to be watered during dry spells, and is quite hardy so can be left in the ground until after the first frosts if necessary, we usually pull our last crop in December. Early sowing will need to be done indoors or under cloche protection until risk of frost has passed.
GO BACK TO YOUR ROOTS: Beetroot Bona is a great starter vegetable to grow. Planting veg, herbs and flowers is a wonderful way to spend time in your garden, cultivate mindfulness and appreciate the little things just like in years gone by. Working with the earth and growing things is immensely satisfying – teach your children or grandchildren this priceless skill of harvesting food in their own gardens, allotments, greenhouses, inside the home in pots or even in community gardens!
